BBC1 CONSUMER PROGRAMME WANTS TO HEAR OF THE EXPERIENCES OF BRITISH PEOPLE BUYING PROPERTY IN FRANCE

Whilst for many, moving abroad is the dream come true that they envisaged, for others unforeseen pitfalls, legal loopholes, or rogue traders can turn the dream into a nightmare they'd rather forget - and a very expensive one at that.

Against a backdrop of what life abroad can be like, BBC1 intends to expose the problems, legal misunderstandings and cons that plague so many British buyers by looking at case studies, with input from legal experts and those who work in the property business.

I am looking to get in touch with anyone who feels cheated by the property business, be it builder, developer, lawyer, agent.... or anyone who wishes they had fully understood the system. It is a sad fact that disaster stories are not that uncommon and often surprisingly similar. By uncovering rogue traders and providing an accurate, illustrated account of buying abroad, successful property purchase in France need not be such a gamble.

What I would like to stress is that there are a lot of very sensationalist 'disaster story' programmes being made at the moment on this subject. We , for BBC1, are trying to move away from that to provide a constructive, educational consumer programme. I think this is quite important - the media has an unfortunate reputation for flocking round over-exaggerated disaster like a vulture over a corpse!
